It all started in 1961 with the 409 CHEVY SUPER SPORT: ICONIC SS STYLE & PERFORMANCE; the 615-horsepower BLAZER SS continues the legacy!
On December 17, 1960, both the Impala SS (Super Sport), one-off showcar, above, and the legendary 409 engine were announced. The initial version of the engine, with a single Carter AFB four-barrel carburetor, produced 360 horsepower. In 1962, this same engine generated 380 horsepower, and a new dual-quad 409 horsepower 409 topped the option list.
The one-horsepower-per-cubic-inch-displacement engine also had a forged steel crankshaft, and in 1963, horsepower soared to 425! The 409 was later replaced by the Mark IV 396 big-block in 1965. In 1962, the Beach Boys 409 song immortalized the dual-quad 409 Chevy in its SURFIN’ SAFARI and LITTLE DEUCE COUPE albums.
It’s a fitting moment to look back at the history of the SS. The ‘61 Impala was the first Chevy production car to offer a Super Sport package. The Impala SS had upgraded heavy-duty springs and shocks, power brakes, and special interior and exterior trim. The Impala SS was available with the 348-cubic-inch or 409-cubic-inch V-8, paired with either a four-speed manual or a two-speed automatic transmission. Two years later, the 1963 Chevy II Nova got an (RPO Z03) SS package, which paired a 120-horsepower Six-cylinder engine with bucket seats and special interior and exterior trim. The new 615-horsepower Blazer EV, above & below, is the latest to wear the Super Sport crown!
