1964 was all about the birth of the Supercar, Hemis, and factory-built racecars. It was also the launch of the 1964 OLDS 442: ‘Police Needed it – Olds Built It – Pursuit Proved It…and enthusiasts celebrated!
Pontiac called its GTO “A Device For Shrinking Time & Distance.” Magazine editors called it a “Supercar”. And, from coast to coast, enthusiasts flocked to Pontiac dealers to see the new GTO, an option that breathed life into a Tempest. Pontiac – not Ford, Chevy or Plymouth – essentially created the option that ignited the Supercar Revolution and an almost cult-like movement. The GTO’s extensive performance, comfort, and convenience “menu” was the envy of the industry. It was the Supercar for all seasons – and reasons. But let’s not forget about the 1964 OLDS 442.
Oldsmobile’s response to the GTO was a midyear 442, showcased by a custom auto show Concept 442 convertible, below, that excelled in ride and handling. An offshoot of its successful Police-option F85, the 442 came stock with a 310-horsepower dual-exhaust, four-barrel 330-inch V-8 with four-speed. Even though the 442 showcased a Police Pursuit chassis with HD springs and front and rear sway bars, the 442 lacked the GTO’s power and youth market appeal. Oldsmobile sold only 2,999 midsize musclecars, but it paved the way for much more serious 400 & 455-inch W-30 Ram Air 442-badged Supercars.
