BONNEVILLE: A RACER IN NEED!

Rob Freyvogel was seriously injured in a 400-mph crash on the Salt Flats in an attempt to set a new Piston Powered Land Speed record.

BONNEVILLE: A RACER IN NEED!BONNEVILLE: A RACER IN NEED!Anyone who has ever participated as a competitor or even a spectator at Speed Week at Bonneville is aware that land speed record racers, regardless of class, are the most generous, sharing and friendly in the hobby. Bonneville is a place where there are no strangers; even competitors are treated as friends. I’ve been there multiple times as a journalist and a PR guy and I can attest to that. BONNEVILLE: A RACER IN NEED!

Over the past few years Rob Freyvogel’s goal was to break the Piston Powered Land Speed record with his Carbinite AA/BFS streamliner, a car totally built by him and a dedicated and talented team of volunteers. Every trip to Bonneville Rob gained more attention, because of the beauty of his racecar, its unique design,  enthusiasm of the team, and that they were an underdog.

BONNEVILLE: A RACER IN NEED!During the off-season, Rob often took the car to local high schools to inspire students to dream big and pursue careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) fields of study. His Carbinite race team’s motto: To Learn. To Serve. To Inspire.

On Sunday, September 15th, Rob was again trying to break the AA/BFS record. Unfortunately while accelerating to his goal of over 500 mph, he was involved in an extremely violent crash. Rob was airlifted to Salt Lake City, where he is now taking on the toughest challenge of his life.

After several days in the intensive care unit he was stabilized enough to move into the Neuro ICU that is better equipped to handle Traumatic Brain Injury patients. Every day has been full of new battles and ups and downs, but his wife Sue has been by his side and staying incredibly strong for their five children, family and friends. There is no way to know the extent of Rob’s brain injury at this time, but the doctors have advised Sue to prepare for a marathon, not a sprint for his recovery.

Rob will be 2,000 miles away from his home in Pittsburgh, PA for an extended period of time, creating another challenge for his family. He supports his family with his own business and although he has a wonderful group of employees to keep everything running, there is no doubt his absence will be felt. Please help the family of this incredible man during this extremely difficult time.
