Corvettes have a side hustle: They help sell automotive magazines! Corvette historian and illustrator, Scott Teeters, blogs about the BEST CORVETTE MAGAZINE COVERS.
Back in the day – 1960s-1980s – when I edited enthusiast car magazines (Hi-Performance CARS, SPEED and SUPERCAR, RODDER & SUPER/STOCK) and produced the first regular frequency magazine for Corvette enthusiasts sold on newsstands (VETTE), I learned that putting a Corvette on the cover almost always guaranteed higher sales. Obviously, every issue of VETTE had a Corvette on its cover!
CORVETTE REPORT’s Scott Teeters has been writing about and illustrating Corvettes for more than 40 years, and he recently penned an article about the BEST CORVETTE MAGAZINE COVERS.
Of the eight top Corvette magazine covers he featured in the lead of his blog, I was happy to see that I photographed two of those covers: Hi-Performance CARS with Joel Rosen’s prototype Baldwin-Motion Phase III Corvette GT, and one issue with one of John Greenwood’s legendary wide-body racecars. There were many more over the years.
Scott Teeters: Greetings. Please allow me to geeze for just a moment. http://I was “stung” by a Sting Ray that sat on display at Haddonfield Chevrolet in Haddonfield, NJ. Our home was just a mile west in Collingswood, only a few minutes from the Delaware River and Philadelphia. As a result, we often passed by the dealership. I was there with my older brother, who was bringing in his ’57 Chevy for service, so I waited in the showroom.
While standing there – probably with my mouth wide open – I stared at the most beautiful car I had ever seen: a ’65 Corvette Sting Ray Coupe. Even though the color escapes me now, the memory of that moment remains vivid. I also can’t remember whether it had side pipes. Back then, I wouldn’t have even known what side pipes were for. However, everything changed in an instant. Suddenly, all I wanted to learn about were cars – especially Corvettes.
